News / Surrender your weapons
A TOTAL of 50 air guns have been handed into Lerwick police station as part of a nationwide campaign ahead of a new law being implemented.
Air gun owners not wishing to apply for a new licence
after 1 July are being encouraged to hand their weapons over to the police.
The new law, which will come into effect on 31 December, will mean anyone who possesses, purchases, uses or acquires an air weapon will need to have a certificate.
A total of 2,301 airguns have been handed in across Scotland in just one week.
Shetland’s chief inspector Linsday Tulloch commented: “This is a really encouraging start to the campaign locally.
“I’d like to thank members of the community who have already handed in their weapons and encourage anyone who hasn’t yet done so to start making arrangements over the next fortnight.
“If you have friends or family members who may not have heard about the campaign please do encourage them to consider their plans for their air weapons; either by obtaining a licence from 1 July or handing them into Lerwick police station.
“You can find out all you need to know about the surrender campaign on our website or visit the station.”
