News / Lerwick man admits brandishing knife
A MAN from Lerwick who brandished a knife at his wife has been remanded in custody for nearly a month, as reports are prepared ahead of sentencing.
[Name and address removed under right to be forgotten legislation] appeared from custody at the town’s sheriff court on Thursday to admit assaulting his wife on 8 August at an address in Lerwick and pushing her while brandishing a knife.
The 40 year old also pled guilty to breaching a court order by contacting the woman between 16 August and 5 September last year by repeatedly sending her text messages.
[The man] again breached bail by being the company of the woman in a Lerwick pub on 23 April this year.
Defence agent Gregor Kelly said that the couple’s relationship was “toxic” and had unravelled following allegations of “marital infidelity”.
He added that his client was “greatly embarrassed” by his actions and had lost his job as a result.
“Alcohol appears to be a factor in this,” Kelly added.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the “penny has finally dropped that the relationship is over”.
Sheriff Philip Mann adjourned the case until 24 May to allow criminal justice social work reports to be prepared.
He admitted that it was a “really difficult” decision with regards to bail, but [the man] no longer had the “presumption of innocence” and that the knife charge would merit a custodial sentence anyway.
He refused bail and remanded [him] in custody in the meantime.
