News / Breast screening unit returns
OVER THREE thousand women in Shetland are due to be invited to attend breast screenings in Lerwick this summer.
A mobile unit will return to the Clickimin Leisure Complex from 9 May until September to screen women aged between 50 and 70.
It travels north to Shetland every three years and this visit will be the first time digital mammography is available in the unit.
Invitations will be sent out to every woman in Shetland who is eligible for a screening.
Susan Laidlaw, consultant in public health with NHS Shetland, said that detecting breast cancer early is vital.
“The risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older and the best way of screening for breast cancer is by having regular mammograms as you may not be able to see or feel any early changes in the breast tissue.
“Detecting cancer early provides the best chance of successful treatment,” she said.
Anyone who thinks they should be eligible for screening, but does not receive an appointment, should contact the Breast Screening Centre on 01224 550570.
