News / Four times the limit
A CONSTRUCTION worker from Glasgow who took to the wheel to collect a takeaway while almost four times the alcohol limit has been banned from the road for three years.
David Weldridge, of 258 Rutherglen Road, Gorbals admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday to driving with 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml breath on Lerwick’s Commercial Road on 27 March.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said police were alerted by a concerned member of the public at around 9.45pm due to the manner of the 53-year old’s driving.
He was “clearly drunk” and had a half bottle of alcohol in the front of his van, Mackenzie said.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had been watching football earlier in the day and had been drinking before falling asleep.
The man from Glasgow thought he was fit to drive upon awakening, but was stopped by police when travelling the short distance to collect a takeaway.
Sheriff Philip Mann also fined Weldridge £500.
