News / Guilty of embezzlement
A WOMAN found guilty of embezzling £4,000 from a shop in Scalloway will learn her fate in May.
Emma Warwick, of Gordon Cottage, Levenwick, denied taking the money from Norsepharm on Scalloway’s Main Street between 12 December 2014 and 27 February 2015 while she was working there.
During a trial at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Warwick said that she had concerns about her employer’s security arrangements and wanted to teach them a lesson by taking the cash.
The 25 year old said she signed for a delivery of £4,000 from the Post Office that was meant to replenish the shop’s cash reserves.
Not knowing how to log the money, she left it on a counter for her boss to attend to.
Warwick claimed the money then went missing before she found it in the back of the shop hidden in a box of bandages.
Instead of giving the money back, Warwick said she put it into her bank account to highlight her employer’s apparent lack of security measures over money before sending it back anonymously after she had stopped working there.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Warwick’s version of events did not match what she had originally told police.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said it was believed Warwick’s behaviour was affected by having Aspergers Syndrome.
However, as there was no proof of her condition, Sheriff Philip Mann decided to find Warwick guilty of embezzlement and deferred sentence for reports until 11 May.
