News / Police traffic warning
LERWICK police are stepping up traffic patrols after a man was taken to hospital when a car reversed into him on pedestrian-only Commercial Street earlier this month.
Police have started issuing penalty tickets to drivers found using their vehicles on the pedestrianised section of the town centre street.
They are also warning that they will be using an unmarked vehicle alongside their normal police cars to catch speeding motorists, particularly near schools, as well as drivers using mobile phones and anyone not wearing a seatbelt.
Chief inspector Lindsay Tulloch said: “I would ask everyone using the roads to please keep to the speed limit, drive safely, do not drive and park in the pedestrian areas of the town and help keep Shetland a safe place to live, work and visit.
