News / Unthanks’ isles concert
A FREE-THINKING Mercury Prize nominated group who Q magazine dubbed the “best folk band in the land” will perform in Lerwick in May.
The Unthanks, who hail from Northumberland, will take to the Mareel stage on 26 May. They are also appearing at Orkney Folk Festival as part of a Scottish tour.
The band – led by sisterly duo Rachel and Becky Unthank – take English folk and skew it with influences as diverse as Steve Reich, Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens and King Crimson.
Their often changing line-up usually also features Adrian McNally on piano, violinist Niopha Keegan and Chris Price on guitars and bass.
The Unthanks were nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize in 2008 for their album The Bairns.
They exude a self-proclaimed “restless eccentricity” which has flown throughout their ten year-plus history.
Tickets for the gig will go on sale via Shetland Box Office from 4 March.
