Letters / Consistently unreliable
Once again, a relative trying to perform what should be the simple operation of getting from Shetland to Heathrow has found it will take all day because of delays at Sumburgh, causing missed connections later.
We all accept that weather can delay flights, and no one is to blame, but Monday (15 Feb) was fair, so we can only assume it’s Loganair’s superannuated fleet again.
We ourselves, last month, managed to get from Bergen to Aberdeen without incident, only to find ourselves delayed by 2 hours and 50 minutes before we could take off for Sumburgh.
I’m sure it would have been longer, were it not for the fact that had the delay been 3 hours, Loganair would have become liable to pay compensation.
Over the last two years, I don’t think either I or any member of my family has flown into or out of Sumburgh without significant delays.
When it happens on the way into Shetland, it often means missing the few buses and incurring the expense of taxis; when it’s an outward flight, one risks missing an important connection.
It’s why, when going on holiday, we now prefer to take the ferry and spend a night in Aberdeen; Loganair can simply not be trusted to get you there when they say they will.
I cannot believe any mainland service would be allowed to be so consistently unreliable.
