News / Rejuvenating Grantfield

An architect's drawing of the proposed Grantfield development.

THE REDUNDANT site of Lerwick’s former Grantfield fire station looks set to be rejuvenated with a striking three-story block of flats and offices.

A planning application was submitted in January for the building by Grantfield Developments Ltd.

The proposed building would contain offices on its ground floor, with five flats on its second floor and four on its top level.

Shetland Telecom, who currently house broadband equipment in a former public toilet next door, are expected to move into the development, while the toilet will be demolished.

The building would be clad in coloured timber to provide a “vibrant contrast” to the grey tones of nearby properties.

A total of 13 parking spaces would be created at the site adjacent to Frank Williamson’s DIY shop. Vehicle access would be through the Toll Clock Shopping Centre car park, rather than the busy Grantfield roundabout. The deadline for planning determination is 22 March.
