News / Pogues tribute band
A TRIBUTE band from Ireland make the trip north early next month, bringing their homage to The Pogues to Shetland for the first time.
The Pogoes will play at Mareel in Lerwick on Saturday 5 March. Promoter Alan McLeod said the seven-piece group had built up a strong following in Ireland having formed in their hometown Belfast.
Like The Pogues, whose music has been described as Celtic punk, the Pogoes fuse traditional instruments such as the accordion, tin whistle and mandolin with modern rock to recreate the sound pioneered by The Pogues in their 1980s heyday.
The Pogoes are fronted by Barry Mills, who adopts the persona of the legenday Shane MacGowan to deliver Pogues classics such as ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes,’, ‘If I should Fall from Grace with God’ and perennial favourite ‘Fairytale of New York’.
With The Pogues now seemingly in permanent retirement, McLeod said The Pogoes were a “more than adequate alternative in keeping the spirit of The Pogues alive and ensuring that such great songs will continue to be heard live for years to come”.
- The Pogoes will be supported by the isles’ very own Celtic punks Scaldin Bragg, and tickets are on sale now from Shetland Box Office.
