News / No escape from justice for heroin user
A MAN from Mossbank who fled police on a push bike after throwing away the contents of a bag of heroin has been sent to jail.
Grant Huntington, of 18 Sandside, was sentenced at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday after admitting a number of offences, two of which related to drugs.
On 7 August at the A971 public road in Tingwall, the 27 year old raced away from a police car on a bicycle and discarded the contents of a bag of the Class A drug onto the road and surrounding areas.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the police vehicle ended up switching on its lights and siren, while Huntington engaged in a “clear and concerted attempt” to pervert the course of justice.
The fiscal said the drugs were not recovered but traces were found on wrapper that was picked up and that a “significant amount” of heroin could have been disposed of.
Sheriff Philip Mann jailed Huntington for four months for the drug offences, and a further two months for running away from police officers to avoid being searched at Lerwick’s Harbour Street on 28 April.
He also swallowed controlled drugs with the intent to pervert the course of justice.
Finally, Huntington was fined £180 after he admitted stealing two baskets of crabs and one box of crabs at Clothister, Sullom on 12 April.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client took the items, believed to be the fruits of fishing with a “business partner”, because he thought he was owed cash.
“He didn’t take the right steps to get the money back,” the solicitor admitted.
