News / Car insurance clamp down
NINE vehicles have been seized for not having insurance cover since the start of the year, Shetland police have said.
Area commander Lindsay Tulloch has now reminded motorists that it was their responsibly to ensure that they had suitable insurance cover for the vehicle they were driving.
The Road Traffic Act provides police with powers to seize any vehicle being driven on a road without appropriate insurance cover.
The DVLA database holds up to date information on all vehicles including details of insurance, test certificate and excise.
Chief inspector Tulloch said that officers had access to this database while out on patrol.
He said: “Officers will continue to target uninsured vehicle users and use the relevant legislation to its fullest effect to clamp down on this offence.
“If you are driving without insurance in Shetland you will be charged and have your vehicle will be seized.
“If you allow another person to drive your car without suitable cover you can also be charged with causing and permitting the use of the vehicle which will also lead to the vehicle being seized.”
