POLICE are ordering the public to stay away from Meal Beach in Burra after an unexploded ordnance device believed to pose a “significant danger” was found washed up.

The device, which is said to be “highly toxic”, was discovered on the shore at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

Police and coastguard have set up a cordon to stop people from entering the beach, which is located south east of Hamnavoe.

In a statement released on Sunday, the police confirmed that a specialist disposal team has been requested to deal with the situation.

“The explosive ordnance disposal unit has been contacted and will attend as soon as possible,” they said.

“Police request that members of the public stay clear of this area until further notice.”
