News / Bumper Xmas postbag for Skerries pupil

Skerries boy Aron Anderson and mum Denise on ITV's This Morning.

A SKERRIES pupil dubbed the “loneliest schoolboy in Britain” has received over 2,000 Christmas cards and presents from generous internet users across the world.

Ten year old Aron Anderson, the only pupil at Skerries Primary School, also appeared on popular ITV daytime show This Morning on Thursday.

The Skerries boy was brought to nationwide attention recently after being featured in The Daily Telegraph.

Ross McMahon, a user of website Reddit’s Scotland forum, created a campaign in early December to send Anderson Christmas cards to bring some “festive cheer” to the kid amid his apparent loneliness.

At least 2,000 items have now been sent to Anderson’s school, with more post coming in all the time.

Some of the items have travelled to Skerries from as far away as Japan, Australia and North America.

Aron and his mother Denise Anderson enjoyed some national spotlight this week by appearing on This Morning.

Hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby learned about the plight of Skerries, a group of remote islands with a population of around 40.

The Skerries secondary school, the smallest of its kind in Scotland, was shut last year amid local anger.

Aron was previously joined by his brothers Ivan and Owen in the school, as well as some friends, before they had to attend the Anderson High in Lerwick.

The ten year old was given a day out in London by the This Morning team as a gift.

The Skerries pair responded by giving Schofield and Willoughby Shetland themed mugs.
