News / Online directory scam
SHETLAND trading standard officers are warning businesses to remain vigilant as a publishing house scam does the rounds in the isles.
Team leader David Marsh said companies have been contacted by post to appear in an online directory, but warned that taking part comes at a huge cost.
“The letter, from UK – DATA CONTROL, suggests that you are just being asked to include your VAT Registration Number in a free online directory listing – but completing and returning the form actually commits you to a three year contract at £790 per year,” he explained.
“Any business which has received such a letter, including anyone who has inadvertently returned the form, is very welcome to contact trading standards on 01595 744887 for advice.”
An identical scam was being highlighted from the same bogus organisation in February.
