News / Fined for breaching bail conditions
A MAN accused of threatening his former partner has been fined after breaching bail conditions set just hours earlier.
On Monday (12 October), Paul Stevens, of South Lochside, Lerwick, was granted bail after his case was continued without plea until 28 October.
The 46 year old is charged with entering a house in Cunningsburgh on Saturday without being asked.
He is alleged to have then shouted, swore, made threats, pulled a telephone cable from the wall and smashed a mobile phone to prevent his ex-partner from summoning police assistance, and threw items around the living room.
At Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday, Stevens appeared from custody to admit breaching a special bail condition just hours after it was set by leaving a voicemail on his ex-partner’s phone.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the message wasn’t “threatening” in nature, with an apologetic Stevens reaffirming his “love” for his ex-partner.
Defence agent Chris Dowle said his client “wasn’t thinking straight” when he made the call and took to his phone because he had been “concerned” about seeing his children.
Sheriff Philip Mann fined Stevens £400 for the breach and warned him that his actions could affect the case in the future.
“It is not malicious,” he concluded, “but it still has a potential to tarnish the evidence that your wife will be asked to give against you.”
