News / Lone Bellow heading to isles

The Lone Bellow, a harmony group whose music is influenced by rock, soul, indie and folk, open their 2016 European tour at Mareel in January.

IN-DEMAND southern American, Brooklyn-based rock/soul/indie/folk group The Lone Bellow will kick off their UK tour in Shetland in early 2016.

The singing/songwriting trio of Zach Williams, Brian Elmquist, and Kanene Pipkin, backed by several outstanding musicians, were nominated for best group at this year’s Americana Awards.

The Lone Bellow will play live at Mareel on Thursday 21 January as part of an 11-date European tour that also takes in Celtic Connections in Glasgow.

This year they have performed at major festivals including Newport Folk Festival, while the band have also featured on BBC’s Later With Jools Holland and prestigious US shows including The David Letterman Show and Conan O’Brien.

Their self-titled 2013 debut album saw the band open for acts including the Civil Wars, the Avett Brothers and Dwight Yoakam, and established them as “one of the boldest new acts in the Americana movement”.

It was followed by ‘Then Came the Morning’, produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, creating a sound that “mixes folk sincerity, gospel fervor, even heavy metal thunder, but the heard of the band is harmony: three voices united in a lone bellow”.

Neil Riddell of local promoters Ragged Wood described the group, whose music crosses multiple genres, as an “explosive live act featuring a trio of stunning harmony singers”.
