News / Wind farm consultation

THE COMPANY behind plans to build a 70MW wind farm on the island of Yell has announced a second round of consultation after receiving strong support from the local community.

Manchester based Peel Energy are now proposing to build 17 turbines up to a maximum of 145 metres height at the south end of the island.

The company said they would explain during two public meetings in early October why they have decided to slightly downscale the development.

Initially, the plan was to erect either 20 very large wind turbines or 28 slightly smaller ones.

Development manager Bernadette Barry said: “We are very grateful to local communities for their strong support for the project and we are keen to ensure the process of engagement and feedback continues right up to and throughout the construction and operation of the Beaw Field wind farm.”

“In particular, we are keen to explain how the final design has evolved as a result of technical and environmental studies we have carried out as well as feedback collected previously from local communities”

The events would also provide an opportunity for local residents and other interested parties to quiz the project team in detail, she said.

The two exhibitions are on:

  • Tuesday 6 October, Burravoe Community Hall, 2pm – 7pm
  • Wednesday 7 October, Mid Yell Community Hall, 2pm – 7pm
