News / Recruiting befrienders
THE SHETLAND Befriending Scheme is undertaking a recruitment drive for volunteers to attend training sessions in Lerwick during October and November.
After training is completed, volunteers would commit for a minimum of six months to offer weekly or fortnightly contact with a young person, young adult or someone over 60.
Training is free and includes sessions on a befriender’s role, boundaries and confidentiality, child and adult protection, and anti-discriminatory practices, to name a few.
Everyone taking part will be assessed before working with a vulnerable person one to one, with training for anyone interested in working in education or social care.
A spokeswoman said the scheme is about “positive engagement with another person – having fun, trying new and different activities, developing skills and building confidence”.
Al training and volunteering expenses are covered by the scheme.
