AN INTERACTIVE Scottish Opera production aimed young children will visit Shetland later this year.

The company will bring their interactive show KidO to Mareel in Lerwick on 3 October for two performances at 11am and 2pm.

The production is targeted at 3-4 year olds and it demonstrates that you can “make music out of anything”.

The 45-minute show uses vocal and body percussion to build beats and tunes, while household objects such as teacups are also utilised.

KidO has been created by children’s theatre director Lu Kemp and it features performers Frances Morrison-Allen, Stuart Semple and Adam Gilbert. The music has been created by Glasgow composer Katy Lavinia Cooper.

It tells the story of Major, who likes living tidily, and the ‘chaotic’ Magpie, who is looking for somewhere to store possessions.

The Lerwick shows form part of a wider Scottish tour that will conclude at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.

Jane Davidson, director of outreach and education at Scottish Opera, said that they hope to stimulate children’s “cognitive and emotional development” through music.

“At this age, most children are learning how to build relationships; responding to the actions and attitudes of others as well as testing the boundaries of accepted behaviour,” she added.

“In KidO, they encounter all of these which helps them to identify with the highs and lows (both musical and emotional) of three quirky, engaging characters who inhabit a shared space.”
