News / Lighthouse tower to open
THE LIGHTHOUSE tower of the new Sumburgh Head visitor centre will be open to the public for the first time on Saturday.
The final element of the prestigious £5.4 million project has become accessible for the public following an agreement between Shetland Amenity Trust and Northern Lighthouse Board.
The visitor centre itself was opened last year following extensive restoration of the lighthouse site at Shetland south tip.
The trust said the opening of the working lighthouse tower was another key milestone in the project.
A short ceremony will be held on Friday (7 August) when invited guests including ex-lighthouse keepers who were based at Sumburgh Head will be among the first to take the new tour.
As of Saturday the tower will be open for public tours between Fridays and Sundays until the end of September.
Booking is essential by calling the visitor centre on 01950 461966. More info at: www.sumburghhead.com
