News / Action plan after care report
WORK is already under way to address a number of issues highlighted in an inspection report into services for children and young people in Shetland.
The services under the auspices of the Shetland Community Planning Partnership were rated as ‘good’ in six out of nine categories:
- Improving the well-being of children and young people
- Impact on children and young people
- Impact on families
- Planning for individual children
- Participation of children, young, people, families and other stakeholders
- Leadership of improvement and change
However, officials from the Care Inspectorate found the service to be ‘weak’ in ‘assessing and responding to risks and needs’ faced by children and young people, while ‘providing help and support at an early stage’ and ‘planning and improving services’ were described as adequate.
The inspectors highlighted areas that could be improved, such as the shortage of suitable foster placements in the isles.
Council leader and vice chair of the Shetland Partnership Board, Gary Robinson, said improvements are already in train, and have now been incorporated into an action plan.
“I’m very pleased to see the many positive comments which are included, with inspectors confident that the lives of many children and young people growing up in Shetland are improving as a result of the services delivered to them by the Shetland Partnership.
“We fully endorse the inspectors’ findings, and had already begun work in several areas to address some of the issues highlighted in the report for improvement.
“I’d like to commend the many individuals around the isles who are involved in providing such important services and support to our young folk,’ he said.
