News / Fun in the sun at Sandwick

A RECORD amount in excess of £7,000 was raised for various good causes during a sun-kissed Sandwick Fun Day on Saturday.

It is the sixth year the day, run by local voluntary groups within the village, has been staged. The profits are split between those groups – the only source of income for some of them – and Cancer Research UK.

Chairwoman this year is Debbie Jamieson, who said it had been a fantastic day. The amount raised is the largest yet; since 2010 £8,000 has been raised for CRUK and more than £6,000 for the local groups.

“This money helps all the groups who work so hard at the fun day to provide for our community,” she said. “We have had fantastic feedback from this year – there were lots of happy bairns and happy parents.

Live local music was showcased throughout the day, while this year’s South Mainland Up Helly Aa jarl squad spent the afternoon in Sandwick and Anna, Elsa and Olaf from much-loved Walt Disney Animation Frozen “flew in from Arendelle especially to visit”.

Among the attractions for kids and parents to enjoy were a “teddy bear tumble”, bouncy castles, nail painting, candy floss and a ‘beat the goalie’ competition.

The barbeque was supplied by JK Mainland with fresh Sandwick rolls from the local bakery. “We support our local businesses and they support us,” Debbie said.

“The weather was perfect, which is half the battle of having a successful day! Folk came in their hundreds and we thank them all for supporting our fun day.”

She added: “We hope to see everyone next year!”
