News / Seafoodies back gymnasts

The Shetland gymnasts heading for Ynys Mon this weekend with their sponsor Seafood Shetland's chief executive Ruth Henderson (far right) are: Back (l-r) Julie Grant, Fiona Greive, Hannah Robertson, Sophie Grant, Evie Craigie. Front (l-r) May Young, Mhia Mouat and Arwen Greive.

TRADE body Seafood Shetland is sponsoring local gymnasts’ kit as they travel to Wales for their own island games competition.

The Shetland Gymnastics Club is sending women’s senior and junior teams to Ynys Mon to compete against Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Gotland, Isle of Man and Jersey.

The competition was set up after gymnastics was left out of last month’s NatWest Islands Games.

The team has been training hard over the past year, with members making several trips to a purpose built gymnastics facility in Aberdeen to reach the necessary skill level.

They will be competing in a floor routine to music on a sprung floor, and two vaults.

Travelling from Shetland by ferry on Sunday, they will then be taking the seven hour drive to Anglesey.

The team will have a training day ahead of the competition, which starts on 23 July.

Seafood Shetland chief executive Ruth Henderson said: “We are delighted to be helping the Shetland gymnastics team with this exciting trip and wish those participating all the very best.”
