News / Helen leads the Vikings
FORMER BBC Radio Shetland presenter and Living Lerwick’s communications officer Helen Smith has been appointed to manage a £3 million European project aimed at making Viking heritage more accessible.
The Follow the Vikings project was launched in Lerwick at the end of last week when almost 30 delegates from 14 north European partner organisations visited the isles for their first steering committee meeting.
The four-year EU Creative Europe project is led by Shetland Amenity Trust.
Its general manager and steering committee chairman, Jimmy Moncrieff, said all partners had contributed enthusiastically.
“This is an auspicious start for the project. All the project partners were represented at the meeting and participated in the lively discussions regarding the work ahead.”
He said that Smith would take up her position as project coordinator on 17 August.
The 43 year old will be responsible for coordinating the various strands of the project, including the creation of an international touring event and the promotion of borderless tourism.
