Letters / Harl the Toon Haa
Reflecting on the weather damage and £1.7 million needed to fix Da Toon Haa whilst remembering the last time a huge amount of money was spent on this Hillhead architectural icon, I have an idea based on its construction of unsuitable soft absorbent sandstone.
Wet harl it and then paint it in line with lots of lighthouses, castles and many other historic and much older buildings in climate challenging locations such as ours.
This suggestion is of course based on a common sense attitude to buildings, their durability and costs, but I’m sure the out of control SIC planning and building “un-control” departments will show their usual ignorance to anything based on affordability or common sense, added to delusions of grandeur in the inner sanctum.
On another tack – can we cooncil tax payers afford to keep a knackered building mainly used for weddings, some meetings, photographs with visitors and a platform for local nobles on Up Helly Aa nights, when schools and other important rural services are being cut or at risk?
