Letters / Supporting average speed cameras

Shetland South member Allison Duncan may be right as the 60mph speed limit appeared to be widely ignored when I last drove in Shetland a couple of years ago but fixed speed cameras are not the answer (Flea calls for speed cameras, SN, 29/06/15)

Those of you who have driven in Edinburgh will be aware of the effect of these cameras, reducing the speed of traffic to the limit for about 100 yards.

I have been up the A9 several times since the average speed cameras came into use, travel time is not noticeably different but the change in driver attitude is obvious.

Nose to tail driving before dual carriageway sections and the last mad rush to overtake coming back to single carriageway seems to have gone.

The increase from 40mph to 50mph for trucks has been a success, more or less eliminating the enormous tailbacks of traffic that caused so much frustration for drivers.

The 40mph limit would probably remain in force in Shetland but the distance travelled is shorter allowing less time for building tailbacks.
