Letters / Desperate bid
How very noble of the dishonourable member for Orkney & Shetland to waive his entitlement to a ministerial severance payment of £17,000.
To compensate him for this loss of a golden handshake, may I suggest that he applies for the position of Steward of the Manor of Northstead.
This being “an office of profit under The Crown”, he will be immediately disqualified from continuing to sit as a Member of Parliament.
The resulting by-election will give the voters of Orkney and Shetland a fresh opportunity to elect a fit and proper person,
not one given to “aberrations”, to represent us at Westminster for the next five years.
Should Mr Carmichael decide to seek a fresh mandate by standing in what would effectively be a Recall election, it would be for his constituents to decide whether or not he deserves a second chance, not fellow Liberal Democrat politicians such as Willie Rennie who will put political expediency before principle in a desperate bid to save the skin of their sole remaining Scottish MP.
