A ROYAL Navy mine hunter will arrive in Lerwick on Thursday morning for a five day visit of commemorative events including the 100th birthday celebration of the Voe Bakery.
HMS Middleton will be berthed alongside Victoria Pier for a number of engagements including an open day on Friday between 10am and 5pm.
On Saturday representative from the mine hunter will travel to Voe to mark the military significance of the Voe Bakery during the First World War.
Founded in 1915, the bakery served the Royal Navy’s 10th cruiser squadron, which bunkered at Busta Voe, as well as the second cruiser squadron, which bunkered at the old whaling station at Olna.
On Sunday commemorative wreaths will be laid at the Commonwealth War Graves at the Old Voe Burial Ground by Naval Regional Commander Scotland and Northern Ireland Captain Chris Smith an by Lord Lieutenant Bobby Hunter.
Based at Portsmouth HMS Middleton is one of the Navy’s 15 mine countermeasures vessels.
The ship detects, investigates, and destroys sea-bed threats with the use of high powered sonar, remote underwater vehicles and divers.
