News / Morton steps down

BROADCASTER and journalist Tom Morton has confirmed that he  intends to continue as Unst’s tourism development officer despite calling time on his BBC radio show due to ill health.

The Hillswick-based media man announced on Wednesday that his last Morton Through Midnight show on BBC Radio Scotland will take place on 31 May.

Morton is leaving the network after suffering a “fairly major health scare” recently that saw his heart installed with a stent.

The broadcaster said he needed to “change the way he lives and work” as a result of the episode.

Morton was appointed tourism development officer for Unst on a six-month contract in March.

“I intend to continue with the six-month Unst contract,” he said.

Morton, however, added that he is at the moment “reviewing other voluntary commitments”.
