News / Ear-marking study
A study into the links between ear-marking sheep in Shetland and Swedish Saami People’s ear-marking of reindeer calves is to be launched in May.
Prof. Hugh Beach from the University of Uppsala in Sweden and coordinator Tim Senften will lead the research to compare the two practices.
The Saami are an indigenous group of people from Northern Scandinavia who are reliant on the use of reindeers.
They historically developed a custom of ear-marking reindeer calves, with the practice similar to Shetland’s tradition of marking lambs.
Senften is calling on Shetlanders with knowledge of sheep ear-markings to share their experiences, with pictures, video and letters welcome to be submitted.
The research will also examine whether sheep ear-marking – a custom apparently started in the isles in the 17th Century – is prevalent today in Shetland and how it was originally undertaken.
