News / Man appears in court after bomb hoax

A FORTY-two year man from Ayrshire has appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Thursday following a hoax call to Shetland Coastguard suggesting that there were explosive devices on two accommodation barges berthed at Lerwick and Scalloway.

The case against Gary Docherty, from Saltcoats, was continued without plea. He was released on bail with special conditions.

Police in Shetland said on Thursday it was quickly established that the call was a hoax and had been made from Saltcoats.

Chief inspector Lindsay Tulloch said making hoax calls to the emergency services was a selfish and dangerous act.

“Police and security officials were tasked to attend the matter which subsequently directed their resources away from other incidents, creating a risk to the community.

“The criminal justice system takes a very dim view of anyone who carries out this type of behaviour and we will continue to treat any such call seriously and ensure we find and arrest those responsible.”
