MEMBERS of the Scottish Green Party have started a local group after a meeting in Lerwick on Tuesday night.
With membership of the Green Party rocketing throughout the UK, Shetland has also seen its membership grow as more and more people become concerned about issues such as the state of the environment and social inequality.
The Greens already have a lot of support in the islands coming third behind the Liberal Democrats and the SNP at last year’s European Parliamentary elections.
A spokesman said there would be no Green candidate for the northern isles at forthcoming UK general election.
However, there would be a chance to vote Green in next year’s Scottish Parliamentary elections, he said.
“We had an encouraging turnout at our meeting on Tuesday. We are all very enthusiastic about taking the Greens forward in Shetland,” he said.
More information about Green activities in the isles will be made available at a later date, he added.
