News / Guest’s welcome songs
YORKSHIRE-RAISED singer songwriter Adam Guest played a warmly received show to launch his debut EP ‘Open the Book’ at Lerwick Boating Club on Friday night.
The intimate venue was packed and made for a congenial atmosphere as Guest performed a 45-minute set of blues and folk-inflected material.
The evening began with the gentle, relaxing and melodic tones of Kirsty North’s clarsach, and she was joined for airy covers of Joy Division and Robert Burns by up-and-coming singer Louise Thomason. Mainstay of the local singer-songwriter scene Arthur Nicholson was in fine voice during his short stint at the mic.
Following a rapid-fire raffle, the affable, amusing Guest took to the stage to dust off a few older songs from his repertoire, including one about a particularly hairy former flatmate, before being joined by Thomason – and later Nicholson, along with fiddler Catherine Brown.
It was a neat, understated set demonstrating what a truly fine guitarist the 26 year old is, with the evening reaching a peak during a harmonic rendition of the EP’s title track.
