News / ‘Blooming marvellous’
WORK to create the Park Lane community garden is progressing well after local organisers received donations of topsoil and plants.
Construction and civil Engineering Firm Frank L Johnston (Shetland) Ltd kindly provided topsoil and his staff also assisted the gardening volunteers developing flower beds and filling the planters.
The garden in the centre of Lerwick’s lanes is part of the ‘Blooming Marvellous’ regeneration work, a legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Local Young Scot youth ambassador Stewart Hornal, who volunteered at the games in July this year, said: “Our role was to help visitors from Scotland and around the Commonwealth to make a ‘seed ball’ – made from a mixture of clay, soil and seeds – which would then be distributed throughout all 32 local authorities in Scotland.
“We have been working to find a place to plant the seeds and were so happy to work with the Park Lane community garden project.
“We all enjoyed planting the seed balls as it was a good opportunity to give back to the community and look forward to seeing them flower next year.”
Plant donations have also been received from other Shetland gardeners who are keen to see the project flourish.
