THE MEMORIAL in the west side village of Walls to the men who died during the two world wars has been spruced up with a grant of more than £2,000 from the Scottish government.
The Walls community took advantage of the Scottish government’s £1 million Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
On Friday first minister Alex Salmond announced the latest tranche of £160,000 for 20 memorials across Scotland, including £2,010 for Walls.
Doug Forrest, who used to be head teacher at neighbouring Happyhansel primary school, said the money was spent last month on repairing the harling, plaster and stonework in the wall surrounding the memorial.
“The memorial is a focal point of the village and of course serves as a reminder of all those who gave their lives in the two world wars, so it is extremely important to the village,” he said.
