Letters / This isn’t an election
Gordon Harmer maintains the forthcoming referendum is a vote for or against the SNP (‘Alex Salmond and the SNP’, 8/9/14).
If Gordon’s assertion were correct we would have an undemocratic one party state in the event of a majority voting Yes, as there are no alternatives to vote for and most people wouldn’t be able to select their party of choice.
But Gordon is wrong to say the SNP have made this vote about themselves. This isn’t an election. We can’t vote for any political party so a Yes vote will not give the SNP a mandate to govern an independent Scotland.
Gordon claims most of what is negotiated by the SNP-led Scottish Government in the event of a Yes vote will be irreversible. I’d like to know what he thinks couldn’t be changed by the people of Scotland through the democratic process?
