News / Shot in the dark
SHETLAND MSP Tavish Scott has urged local crofters to reject Scottish independence in this month’s referendum, saying it would create uncertainty for the industry.
The LibDem MSP said crofters were worried about markets for lamb, beef and other produce if Scotland detached itself from its biggest market, the rest of the UK.
He also raised questions about the impact of independence on subsidy payments, which rely on arrangements with the European Union.
“Independence is a shot in the dark and poses real risks for Shetland agriculture. I believe that is why local crofters will overwhelmingly reject that uncertainty and vote no thanks to Scottish independence,” he said.
Meanwhile Scott is encouraging local crofters and like status farmers to share their views on the current system of crofting arrangements by filling in the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HPSXZ29 or picking up a paper copy at his constituency office.
