News / New Brae homes
SHETLAND ISLANDS Council has completed building work on ten new homes in Brae.
Work began on the properties in July 2013, and the £1.5 million new development is situated in the Moorfields area in the north of the village.
The local authority said each of the two bedroom homes has been built to a “modern, energy efficient specification, including low maintenance building materials and ground source heat pumps to provide cost effective heating”.
The development will be named Gary Couper Road in remembrance of Gary Couper, who worked as an architectural technician within the housing service.
He had been involved in the design and planning of the new homes when he died suddenly in 2011 at the age of 39.
SIC housing manager Anita Jamieson said the properties would provide “much-needed, affordable housing” in the North Mainland. Across Shetland there are currently over 850 applicants on the council’s housing register.
Jamieson added: “Both the council and Hjaltland Housing Association will continue to work together to build homes in Shetland to meet housing need, in line with the local housing strategy.”
