News / Register for referendum
SHETLAND residents are being urged to make sure they are registered to take part in next month’s big vote on Scotland’s future.
The independence referendum takes place on 18 September and islanders are being reminded that the deadline for registering is Tuesday 2 September.
Shetland’s counting officer Jan Riise said: “The independence referendum on 18 September will decide the future direction of Scotland. We don’t want anyone to miss out on having their say because they weren’t registered or didn’t know how to vote.
“Poll cards, with information on how to cast your vote, have been sent out to everyone who is on the electoral register. Anyone who didn’t receive one should check that they are registered, particularly if they have recently moved home.”
The cards include information for voters on where to find their local polling station, which will be open from 7am to 10pm on polling day.
Riise added: “If you can’t get to the polling station on 18 September you can still have your say as you can apply to vote by post or by proxy (where you appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf). You need to apply by 5pm on 3 September to vote in this way.”
Electoral registration forms, along with forms to arrange a postal or proxy vote, are available from the Assessor & Electoral Registration Office in Lerwick by calling (01595) 745700 and can be downloaded from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
