News / EBS system launched

Thousands of offshore workers have undergone training with the new Category A emergency breathing system (EBS).

The first offshore workers to be equipped with the new Category A Emergency Breathing System (EBS) are due to fly out to North Sea installations from Scatsta airport, on Monday morning.

The new system complies with new rules the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) introduced in the wake of the fatal helicopter accident off Shetland in August last year.

From 1 September passengers will not be allowed to sit on the inside seats of a helicopter travelling to and from offshore oil installation without EBS.

As of 1 January next year all passengers will be required to wear the device.

EBS developer Survitec Group said that since the device was approved 26,000 people have completed mandatory training to use it.

The deployment is planned in three phases with the first being in Shetland.

This will be followed by Norwich, Humberside and Blackpool from 25 August, and Aberdeen from 1 September.
