THE FAIR Isle ferry Good Shepherd with 15 people on board is now safely tied up alongside Grutness Pier after suffering engine failure earlier on Tuesday morning.

Lerwick Lifeboat was called out at just before 10am and arrived at the scene at 10.47am

The vessel was a mile and a half off Sumburgh Head when losing all power, and drifted considerably in the strong currents while waiting for the lifeboat.

Engineers will now examine the damage, believed to be in the drive shaft of the fuel pump, and assess whether it can be repaired today.

Eight passengers who were due to sail on the return passage to Fair Isle have been booked on the inter-island flight this afternoon.
