News / Marking WWI
LERWICK Town Hall’s flag is flying at half mast today to mark the outbreak of the First World War exactly 100 years ago.
It will also join the national “Lights Out” initiative this evening, with many UK buildings and landmarks turning off their lights between 10pm and 11pm. The town hall’s floodlights will be switched off, leaving just the flagpole illuminated for that hour.
Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on 4 August 1914, beginning the start of a conflict centred on Europe that lasted until 11 November 1918.
Shetland Islands Council convener Malcolm Bell said: “It is appropriate on this day to fly the Town Hall flag at half mast to pay tribute to all those from, and connected to, Shetland who fell during the First World War”.
