Letters / Democracy in action
Gordon Harmer (Off the ball; SN, 27/06/14) should explain how the UK’s pension provision; the fourth poorest paid in the EU, can be improved?
There simply is not the political will in Westminster to do anything about the situation. Vote No and, by default, you vote for that to continue.
The UK government pays pensioners out of UK taxation. The UK government will pay pensioners out of UK taxation after September 18, until the day Scotland becomes formally independent, at which point the Scottish Government will pay pensioners out of Scottish taxation.
Given that a referendum was in the SNP manifesto, given that the SNP won a landslide in the election, the democratically elected Scottish government is implementing the manifesto that voters across Scotland voted for.
The SNP asked voters for permission to ask the referendum question, the SNP are now asking voters that question. Democracy in action!
