News / Maternity care results
HEALTH chiefs in Shetland have reacted with delight after well above 90 per cent of new mums rated the local maternity service as either excellent or good.
Three quarters of women said the care they had received during pregnancy was excellent and 17 per cent said it was good, while 83 per cent described the care during labour and birth as excellent and 13 per cent as good.
All women who took part in the questionnaire said they saw the same midwife at each antenatal appointment, a result that is 38 per cent higher than the Scottish average.
The survey was undertaken as part of the Scottish Government’s Patient Experience Programme in partnership with the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit (NMAHP Research Unit) to look at women’s experiences of maternity care in Scotland during 2013.
NHS Shetland child and family health manager Kate Kenmure said: “Through listening to women and asking about the care they received we can better understand the differences between maternity care policy and maternity care as it is actually experienced.
“Overall, this is a small snapshot of maternity service user experiences but it is important.
“The plan is to develop a local survey based on these questions to allow us to obtain women’s views and opinions on care in Shetland on a regular ongoing process.”
