News / School magazine shortlisted
A GROUP of sixth-year pupils from Brae High School are on their way to Edinburgh after having been shortlisted in six categories at the annual Scottish School Media awards.
The team behind the Borealis school magazine has being nominated for the commercial strategy, cover, design & layout, distribution & logistics, sports columnist and magazine of the year awards.
A seventh nomination went to former head of the school’s English department, Jim Mainland, whose long involvement with the school magazine won him a place on the shortlist in the inspirational teacher category.
Entries from 18 schools across Scotland have been shortlisted with Brae High School being the only one from the Highlands and Islands area.
Speaking for the four-strong editorial team, Iwan MacBride, said: “I’m absolutely over the moon that we got nominated for so many awards.
“It’s really quite nice to see a tough year of work come to fruition, and I think we’re all just pretty relieved we got to this point.
“I’ve had a blast this year, despite a fair few obstacles being thrown at us, and I’d like to thank our contributors and teachers, as well as the rest of the editorial team, for getting us here.”
Having been involved with the school magazine since his S1 days, MacBride added: “It’s a really worthwhile experience to take part in producing a magazine at school, and something I hope will keep going long after I’ve left.”
The awards ceremony will be held at Our Dynamic Earth on Friday afternoon.
Host of the event will be BBC Scotland sports presenter Jonathan Sutherland, a former pupil of Brae High School.
Scottish education secretary Mike Russell will be guest of honour and will present the award for outstanding pupil.
