News / Skeld man admits Shetland pony neglect
SENTENCE on a westside man who admitted failing to provide adequate food, fresh water, shelter and veterinary care for two Shetland ponies was deferred until 26 June.
David Davies, of Grindibrek, Skeld, pled guilty through his solicitor to two charges of neglect when his case was called at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday morning.
The case came to light when one of the two ponies died of malnutrition and lice infection in December of last year.
The charges relate to a period of more than six months from 1 June until 7 December during which the ponies were held in a field at Greenmow, in Cunningsburgh.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the charges did not properly reflect the extent of the neglect, adding that Davies had repeatedly ignored help that had been offered to him.
Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence for the 59 year old to appear personally in court and also asked for social work reports to be prepared.
