News / Bus station delays

PLANS to transfer the ground floor of Lerwick’s Viking bus station to its new owners are going ahead soon, despite delays in the legal process.

Shetland Islands Council have confirmed that the sale is in the process of being finalised, but are not guaranteeing it will be complete by the 30 May deadline.

Meanwhile rural businesses who were told to make new arrangements for transporting small packages by the bus station as of Friday have now been told they can continue with existing arrangements for the time being.

SIC transport operations manager Karl Symonds said the new owners would be continuing the small freight service, though it might be subject to change, especially while refurbishment work is carried out.

“The small bus freight service will continue, but there may be some interruption and changes necessary to allow the building to be developed,” he said.

He added: “I have read rumours that the waiting room will disappear, people will still be allowed to wait in the new facilities.

“What we have tried to do is make sure that going forward people’s lives are affected as little as possible.

“The purpose of this sale is to provide a transport service that operates in line with the SIC’s medium term financial plan and that also meets the needs of the community.”

The owners of The Great Wall restaurant who are purchasing the ground floor of the building were unavailable for comment.
