News / Royal opening

THE PATRON of the Northern Lighthouse Board, HRH the Princess Royal, will be in Shetland in early June to officially open the refurbished Sumburgh Head Lighthouse visitor centre.

The visitor centre, developed by Shetland Amenity Trust, will however be open to the public a month earlier in 2 May.

Princess Anne is scheduled to tour the new facility on 3 June before a private ceremony to formally open the multi million project.

SAT general manager Jimmy Moncrieff said: “We are very proud of what has been achieved with the new facilities at Sumburgh Head.

“These will significantly enhance the visitor experience and help to attract visitors to Shetland.

“To have Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal officially open the buildings is an honour, especially given her long standing dedication to, and involvement with, the Northern Lighthouse Board.”
