News / EU bins roaming charges
NORTHERN Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has welcomed the European Parliament’s decision to abolish all mobile phone roaming charges across the EU by the end of next year.
It means that, from December 2015, there will be no extra charge for using your mobile phone while in another EU member state.
In the past many phone users have been caught out by high roaming charges, leading in the worst cases to bills for thousands of pounds.
Carmichael said: “This is a decision that will have a real benefit on many tourists and businesspeople in Britain, and the wider EU, who will now benefit from using their phones abroad without having to worry about extortionate charges.”
He claimed: “Consumers have massively benefited from the UK’s positive engagement with the European Union over the years and this is just the latest example of this.”
